Do you know what I enjoy most about the weekend? The downtown escapades and searches for new restaurants with tastefully crafted dishes that fit my fancy and low carb lifestyle. Low carb dinning out can be quite difficult to some, but it doesn’t have to be!
Low Carb Dinning Out
Prior to dining at any restaurant, try to check out their website because they usually have a complete menus (with pictures) available for you to view. This can help you narrow down choices and decide how to enhance your dish to be low carb friendly.
For those of you who make an unexpected stop at a restaurant and don’t have time to plan, don’t fret! First, as tempting as it may be, always skip the breadbasket. It’s so easy to go overboard on the free bread when you’re starving and waiting for your food to arrive. Instead, order a classic Cesar or Garden Salad as a starter (minus any croutons).
Ordering drinks is one of the main areas I see friends slip up. Make sure to order water, diet soda, or unsweetened tea. For those of you whom must order an alcoholic drink, try to bring your own mix-in (i.e. powdered mixes or flavor drops), look for a skinny menu, look up the nutritional information, or use club or diet soda as the mixer.
When looking over the menu you will probably notice that all or most entrees come with some sort of starchy side such as pasta, rice, or mashed potatoes. DON’T feel embarrassed to ask the waiter to substitute it with another side like seasoned vegetables. I do it all the time, as you can see from my low carb restaurant reviews and the tastefully crafted picture above.
Skip the dessert menu and try making your own at home, you can always browse my low carb dessert index for ideas.
Following these simple tips will allow you to enjoy a nice dinner out with just a bit of thoughtful preparation.
